A 12 year old Colorado boy shot himself in the leg this week while playing with a loaded gun his parents left hidden under the family’s Christmas tree. Luckily, the boy’s injuries were not life threatening, and he was successfully treated after being rushed to the hospital by other family members who were in the home at the time of the shooting accident (the boy’s parents were not home).

For some reason, the sheriff is not recommending that charges be filed against the boy’s parents, claiming that the parents left the .22 pistol a “reasonable distance” from the child.

REALLY??? Who in their right mind thinks hiding a loaded gun under a CHRISTMAS TREE is a “safe space” from children? I mean, really– what kid under 17 hasn’t gone digging around under the Christmas tree in the weeks leading up to Christmas day?

We’re no legal experts, but this sheriff doesn’t exactly sound like the sharpest tool in the shed to us!
