Brazilian Courts Award American Father Custody Of Son
The New Jersey father who has been fighting the Brazilian government for custody of his estranged son for the past 5 years, finally got some good news this week.
On Wednesday, a panel of three Brazilian judges ruled that the boy Sean, now 9 years old, should be returned to live with his biological father, David Goldman. The ruling states that the boy should be placed in his father’s custody no later than this Friday at the American Consulate in Rio de Janeiro. Despite the good news, the ruling is likely to be challenged on appeal.
Goldman’s saga began back in 2004, when his then-wife, Bruna Bianchi, left America with the couple’s 4 year old son for what was supposed to be a two week trip to Brazil. However, Bruna stayed in Brazil with her son instead of returning to the U.S., and later divorced Goldman. Bruna remarried, but died last year in childbirth. However, her Brazilian husband then claimed parental rights to Bruna’s son, refusing to allow him to return to his biological father’s care, and setting off a legal battle between the two men over who should raise the child.
Goldman has since been fighting to regain custody of his son for the past 5 years, gaining international attention and support for the return of his son.
