Bryant Gumbel was sitting in for Regis Philbin on Tuesday’s Live With Regis and Kelly when he shocked co-host Kelly Ripa by candidly announcing his recent battle with lung cancer!

“They opened up my chest; they took a malignant tumor, part of my lung and some other goodies,” he said. “The pathology on most of the stuff came back benign but enough aggressive cells had escaped the tumor that it warranted some treatment.”

Bryant appeared healthy, telling the audience “I’m OK for the time being,” and stated that he’d only shared information about his condition with a few family members and select friends.
