Detroit Mayor Finally Steps Down
Embattled Detroit Mayor, Kwame Kilpatrick, resigned today after accepting a plea deal in his criminal case. Kilpatrick pleaded guilty to 2 counts of obstruction of justice and received a sentence of 4 months in jail. He also agreed to pay $1,000,000 in restitution. The plea deal also places the disgraced mayor on 5 years of probation. Today’s plea will also prevent Kilpatrick from running for any elected office for a period of at least 5 years. Prior to today, the mayor had held fast to his office in the midst of his growing legal woes and sex scandal, refusing to step down from his position despite increasing negative public sentiment and urgings to do so.
In addition to today’s hearing on perjury and obstruction charges, Kilpatrick also pleaded no contest in an assault case, which stemmed from an incident in which he allegedly shoved a sheriff’s detective who tried to serve a subpeona on an acquaintance of his in July. Kilpatrick received a 4 month jail term for that charge as well, which was ordered to be served at the same time as his term for perjury and obstruction.
Kilpatrick’s case made national news when it was revealed that the very-married-mayor and an aide lied under oath regarding an affair the two were having and about their roles in the controversial firing of a Detroit police chief. The couple’s affair came to light when steamy text messages regarding the couple’s sexual relationship were revealed to the public.
In the official “awkward” category, both Kilpatrick’s wife and the aide he had the affair with were present in court today for his hearing. Can you say “uncomfortable”?!
