It’s Official! Merriam Webster Announces Its New Words
Each year, the brainiacs over at Merriam Webster scan books, newspapers, the web, tv, movies and other outlets in search of new words that are taking over the English language. The word sleuths then decide which of these words are deserving of “official” entry into the Merriam Webster dictionary, thereby making “real words” out of these terms we can’t seem to stop using.
Some of our favorites are listed below. And though we might have defined the words with a little more flavor, it’s nice to see these words finally get their props! Check out some of the new additions:
flash mob- a group of people summoned (as by e-mail or text message) to a designated location at a specified time to perform an indicated action before dispersing
staycation- a vacation spent at home or nearby
reggaeton- popular music of Puerto Rican origin that combines rap with Caribbean rhythms
locavore- one who eats foods grown locally whenever possible
frenemy- one who pretends to be a friend but is actually an enemy
