Tainted Milk In China Giving Infants Kidney Stones; Some Die

Tainted Milk In China Giving Infants Kidney Stones; Some Die

\ China has a major scandal going on where millions of gallons of milk have been tainted with a poison and have made more than 6,200 babies sick with kidney stones while 4 infants have died. 82% of infants that consumed the milk were under the age of 2.

The chinese milk powder was laced with melamine, which is an industrial chemical used to make plastics and fertilizer and causes kidney stones if consumed. “Suppliers trying to cut costs are believed to have added it to watered-down milk because its high nitrogen content masks the resulting protein deficiency,” according to the report from USA Today.

Of course the government issued a ban on all diary products but it seems like the health scare has widened as far as Thailand. The World Health Organization warned that the contaminated milk could have been smuggled across various borders.

There is now more fear that anything (cookies, ice cream, cheese, etc.) made with the contaminated diary products might also be contaminated.

What scares me is if something like this could happen in the US! How are we protected against the very thing that we must feed our children for nourishment and proper brain/bone development? What does the US have in place to ensure our safety?
